What is the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX)?
Located in Toronto, Ontario, the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is a major stock market in Canada.
The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) was established in 1861 and is currently home to more than 1,500 publicly traded companies. Foreign listings and ETPs are also available through the exchange.
In 1997, it shut down its physical trading floor and transitioned to an electronic system.
The TMX Group was formed when the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) and the Montreal Exchange (MX) combined in 2007.

Learning About the TSX
After the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, the Toronto Stock Exchange ranks as North America’s third-largest stock exchange in terms of trading volume.
The origin of the market can be traced back to the middle of the 1800s. The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSE) began operations in 1861 and became a legal entity in 1878.
In 2002, the corporation underwent a rebranding that resulted in the TSX being its new name.
Unless otherwise noted, trading occurs on weekdays only at the exchange. Regular trading begins at 9:30 a.m. ET and continues until 4:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. Pre-open trading is from 7:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. ET, during which time orders can be entered but not yet executed.
As was mentioned above, the trading floor was removed from the exchange in 1997. In an effort to compete with the Nasdaq in the United States, the TSX converted to an electronic trading system.
Exchange-traded products (ETPs), investment trust shares, and company stock are all examples of traded instruments. Bonds, commodities, futures, options, and other derivative products are only some of the other financial items that change hands frequently.
The Canadian dollar is used for all dealings. There were 1,572 issuers listed on the market in 2020, as reported by the Guide to Listing.
In 1977, the exchange unveiled its version of the S&P 500 called the TSE 300 Composite Index.
The index’s name was changed to the S&P/TSX Composite Index from its previous iteration in 2002 since it tracks the performance of the most actively traded stocks on the exchange. At the beginning of each quarter (March, June, September, and December), the index is reset to its initial value.

The TSX was designated as Canada’s sole senior equity exchange in 1999. Two years later, it bought the TSX Venture Exchange, a small-cap stocks.
