Overview of the Forex Basket Trading Strategy.
Managing your investment risk is the most difficult component of trading Forex. Furthermore, keeping a sound trading strategy is closely tied to reducing Forex risk. The unpleasant truth is that gaining a competitive edge is difficult.
To become a successful trader, you must understand when to join and depart the market. And, although it seems easy, it is significantly more complicated in reality. 95 percent of traders lose money for a reason.
But there is still hope.
What if we told you that you can learn to avoid two key trading aphorisms and become wiser as a result?
The trends are on your side.
Reduce your losses and let your profits continue.
Let’s start by going over the fundamentals of Forex basket trading.
What exactly is forex basket trading all about?
When the market aligns, basket trading in forex comprises buying and selling a large number of correlated or uncorrelated currency pairs all at once. The aim is for all open positions to equal one after a certain length of time, at which point transactions may be discontinued profitably. This shows that the sum of all earnings and losses is positive.
You focus on a variety of currency pairs rather than a single currency.
Due to the positive and negative correlation between different currency pairings, some positions may cancel each other out. In this regard, a basket of currency pairs may be utilized to develop a market-neutral approach.
What is the Basket Trade Process?
Essentially, we search for a currency pair with a definite trend (bearish or bullish). We may choose our currency basket once you have evaluated the general trend of that particular currency pair by assessing the strengths and weaknesses of both currencies.
For example, if you see a big negative trend in the USD/JPY across all currency pairs, this will be our starting point for building our basket.
The Japanese yen is strengthening while the USD/JPY exchange rate is falling overall.

After finishing our USD/JPY study, we may disperse our risk over all YEN crosses.
In addition to the USD/JPY pair, we are shorting GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY, and AUD/JPY.
Look at the following currency chart:

Just looking at one chart reveals that some currency pairs move faster than others, despite the fact that JPY strength is obvious across all YEN crosses.
As a result, now that four currency pairings have aligned, you may risk 1% on each pair independently if you had only planned to risk 4% on the USD/JPY trade.
Despite its attempts to distribute risk, the forex basket trading technique has a major flaw.
The effectiveness of this approach is dependent on your ability to properly identify forex market trends. Even with the best-laid basket trading strategy, choosing the wrong trend will lead to failure.
Our in-house created forex basket trading strategy removes the directional trading component. Before we go into our own unique technique, let’s go over some of the reasons why the forex basket trading strategy is useful.
Reasons to Use the Forex Basket Trading System.
It’s important to understand that trading basket currencies takes away from the zero or hero trading environment.
What does this indicate for us?
Any market, including stock, futures, commodities, bitcoin, and FX trading, is highly emotional. All market prices are primarily influenced by greed and fear. Everyone is afraid of losing money and greedy about retaining what they have.
As a result, forex basket trading allows you to break away from the illusion of always being accurate. Traders who believe they can win every deal will ultimately face challenges. When the market proceeds in its own path, you may accept a loss when you are wrong and profit when you are accurate.
Second, you may diversify your investment risk by participating in basket trading.
Basket trading allows us to spread the same amount of risk, bust, over many currency pairs rather than focusing on a single trading method.

Trading Strategies for Forex Baskets
As previously stated, the conventional basket trading technique involves selecting a basket of currency pairings based on which currency pair has the strongest trend. However, as everyone knows, the market swings up and down in waves rather than going straight forward.
Furthermore, as we all know, every trend eventually comes to an end and reverses itself.
As a result, we have turned the forex basket strategy into a non-directional method.
Important Note: Even if we are incorrect about the direction of the currency market, our basket trading strategy is non-directional in the sense that the overall holdings may still provide a profit.

This suggests that we will continue to try to forecast the trend and alter our positions accordingly.
Let us now show the basis or framework of our currency basket strategy.
Step 1: Determine the direction of the US dollar trend.
Several popular strategies may be used to determine a currency’s trend direction.
An uptrend may be detected using the price structure’s higher highs and lower lows, whilst a downtrend can be identified using the inverse criterion. Nonetheless, technical signals are an alternative.

Using the DXY chart above, we may conclude that the US dollar is gaining.
It is projected that the dollar would strengthen in comparison to its primary competitors.
Obviously, the next step is to pick which currency pairs to buy and sell. This is what will determine whether or not the strategy works.
View below:
Step 2: Select Currency Pairs
Currency pairings will be chosen depending on whether pairs are moving against or alongside the strength of the US dollar.
To do this, we will track which currency pairs have moved in tandem with the US dollar over the previous several days.

Only two currency pairings, AUD/USD and EUR/USD, have benefited the most from the dollar’s rise. Despite the dollar’s surge, GBP/USD moved only slightly negative, while USD/CAD was almost flat.
So, in this example, we’d want to:
- Sell EUR/USD and AUD/USD to buy the dollar against currencies that have risen in lockstep with the dollar’s increase.
- Sell the dollar against currencies that haven’t kept up with its advance (buy GBP/USD and sell USD/CAD).It should be noted that the risk will be equally dispersed among the four currency pairs. That is to say, we will buy and sell an equal number of lots.
Let us now look at the potential outcomes for our holdings at the end of the first trading day. Here’s how our currency portfolio might look:
- Sell the EUR/USD trade (losing two pips).
- Sell the USD/AUD trade (losing three pips).
- Sell the USD/CAD trade (losing 16 pips).
- Buy GBP/USD (-27 pip loss).
Our overall holdings would be -50 pip after the first trading day. Despite the poor results, let us consider continuing and waiting a full 10 days to see what occurs.
Here’s how our currency positions might look:
- Sell the EUR/USD trade (you made 79 pips).
- Trade AUD/USD and earn by +105 pips.
- Sell the USD/CAD trade (losing 80 pips).
- Purchase GBP/USD transaction (loss of 14 pips).

Our overall earnings and losses amount to +90 pip.
Using this method, some trades will inevitably end in losses. Our objective is to create a non-directional currency portfolio that will earn profits even if we are incorrect about the direction of the trend.
It’s critical to understand how to win even when you lose, as the title suggests.
Any trader will ultimately lose some trades.
Using a forex currency index, such as the US dollar index, is another approach to implement the forex basket trading idea.
Using the Currency Index in Forex Basket Trading Strategies
A currency index is a metric that compares the value of one currency to a group of foreign currencies. Although most traders are familiar with the US dollar index (DXY), you may establish an index for the GBP, EUR, JPY, and other currencies.
Certain trading systems provide free currency basket indexes.
For this forex basket trading approach, we would need to combine at least three assets.
Assume we wish to measure the overall strength and weakness of the British Pound.
The British Pound index and two more GBP crosses, such as GBP/USD and GBP/JPY, will be utilized in this manner.
By examining the market structure and the correlation between the currency pairings, traders may use this basket trading approach to assess the advantages and disadvantages of individual currency pairs.
This means that we search for indications of potential divergence signals between the currency pairings in the market movement. then take action in light of that knowledge.
As an illustration:
A hint of weakness and potential reversal is indicated if the British Pound index reaches a new higher high but one of the GBP crosses is unable to do the same.
It’s evident that the GBP/USD and British Pound index move together, but the GBP/JPY pair defies this trend and is unable to reach a new, higher high.
We may sell the weakest currency pair in this trading scenario, which is GBP/JPY.
However, we may also sell all of the GBP crosses at the same time to distribute our risk across a number of other currency pairings. As you can see, there are many methods to use basket trading. By experimenting with various trading conditions, you may develop a custom forex basket trading approach.
Concluding Remarks: Forex Basket Trading Strategy
In conclusion, if you plan ahead and use profitable forex basket techniques, losing trades may really be a positive thing. If you can choose strong currency pairings and use excellent risk management strategies, the forex basket trading method may provide enormous gains.
Being a consistent trader requires consistency; it can’t be done once. Being associated with various currency pairings can boost your chances of success if you want to be a consistent trader. Even if certain currency pairings in basket trading will show losses, there will be other pairs that will counter those losses, allowing you to emerge from the competition on top.
